What’s in a baby name? The whole world of our nicknames for Eliza

October 18, 2012

Me and Eliza, matching stripes not intentional (honestly!)I really, really loved this post that Fritha wrote about nicknames for her baby, so wanted to write about some of ours (Fritha was one of my fellow Pregnancy & Birth magazine mums-to-be!)

It took us ages to pick Eliza’s name – it was basically a looong process of me suggesting an obscure old lady name and being instantly vetoed – but both Alex and I are known by short versions of our names, so we knew we wanted something with nickname potential. It turns out there’s now a million different things we call her, most of which are only tenuously linked to her name. I’m sure even now this list doesn’t include them all, but here goes:

  • Eli, Li, Liza (all the obvious ones)
  • Lizzles
  • LiLi G (this is her future rapper name)
  • Lion / Liono / Liono Blair
  • Mugaroo / Mugachips / Mugarooney (long story behind this one, but there are endless incarnations of it)
  • Chairman Proud
  • The Chairman
  • El Chubitan (bit mean…but she did used to have very chubby wrists)
  • Grace Face
  • Howel Babu / Babu Howel
  • Eliza Minelli
  • Buster
  • And finally, Gummu (very topically teething related – we now have a top one!)

It’s actually good writing these down as I’m sure we’ll forget them all soon as we make up new ones. Do you call your baby by bizarre nicknames? What’s the oddest one? Tell me it’s not just us!

We’ve had a fun morning at a new playgroup but seriously, I’m not sure which one of us is more exhausted (possibly not the one crawling round trying to pull books from the shelves). I’m looking forward to a joint naptime.

    We have loads too:

    The barnster
    Mini brob (his prebirth name)
    This has spawned
    Mini brobbles, brobboley, the brobster
    Barney brobboley, Mr brobbles
    B Rob
    Mr handsome dansome
    I’m sure there’s more!

A great post as you’re right, i’ve never collated them before and am sure they’ll change and i’ll forget them.

I love these! Brilliant how his pre-birth name has given birth to loads of new ones 🙂 Will be interesting to tell them when they’re grown up – I can imagine the confused looks!

The very hungry Estherpillar is brilliant! Well, they’re all good but I think that’s my favourite. Funny how they come out of nowhere but just stick!

Chloe rarely gets called her name. She is generally known as Boo-boo. Then my mum sometimes calls her Ruby Lee (which is her middle names – and were names she was going to have before she was born presuming she was a girl!). As a bump she was called Junior.
Her other nickname is Puckypoo. A phrase I thought my other half kept calling her. It should be Duckypoo (a reference to late 80s kids cartoon Count Duckula) but I hear Puckypoo. So it’s stuck!

Great nicknames! Imagine explaining them to her when she’s older “Well once upon a time I misheard your father…” 🙂
