Tummy time in the Night Garden

April 26, 2015

ITNG new tummy time book for babiesDo you do a lot of tummy time with your babies? Neither of mine were massive fans to start with, but Florence actually prefers being on her front now she can roll over and move by herself. She likes it even more if there are things for her to look at and play with (current favourites include the balls from her play gym and Eliza’s stuffed Iggle Piggle toy. Shhh, don’t tell her).

So I suspected she might like the brand new In the Night Garden tummy time book we were sent to review. Published by Ladybird, it’s a pop-up play book designed to entertain babies, making it a lot more fun for them when they’re getting down on the floor.

In the Night Garden tummy time book for babies

At first it appears to be a flat board book, but aha! It unfolds and then you tie it together to form a 3D carousel, like this:

In the Night Garden tummy time book

In the Night Garden tummy time book Ladybird

ITNG children's book

How clever?

The book features the familiar ITNG characters (Iggle Piggle in his boat, the Tombliboos creating noisy havoc in their dimensionally-challenged house, and Upsy Daisy and her one-person disco) as well as a whole host of the familiar objects, all at the right height for children to look at when they’re lifting their heads up from the floor.

There are also different patterns and textures for them to investigate, all in a glorious bright colour scheme.

Although she’s yet to watch In the Night Garden, as mentioned Florence is magnetically attracted to Eliza’s stuffed Iggle Piggle so she was immediately drawn to the book. I can imagine it looks brilliant to children – it’s so colourful.

I think it’s such a simple but clever idea. Eliza is also fascinated, and it’s a book that’s really fun for them to explore together.

ITNG book for babies

But it still doesn’t answer any of my questions – why is there no weather in the Night Garden, how do all the characters go to bed with no fuss and why is it so intensely hypnotic to adults (especially when you’ve had no sleep)?

You can win your own copy of the book, too.

To enter:

Leave a comment via the Rafflecopter widget below and tell me which your favourite In the Night Garden character is (Iggle Piggle, Upsy Daisy, Makka Pakka or even one of the Tombliboos?). The prize draw will close at 12am on 11/05/15. The winner will be picked at random from all valid entries.
