The best dresses for breastfeeding

April 9, 2013

Did you struggle to find the best dresses for breastfeeding, or any clothes you liked that were suitable for breastfeeding? Thrilled post-birth at thought of being able to wear all my normal outfits again, I soon realised that most of my wardrobe was ruled out due to lack of easy boob access.

Tops were mostly fine, but it was my dresses I missed the most, all of my lovely, non-stretchy or button-up, high necked and tight, highly impractical dresses. And it’s more difficult than you’d think to buy ones that don’t involve flashing everyone, especially if frumpy shirt dresses are not for you. So I wish I’d known earlier about Milk&Mummy, the site for beautiful breastfeeding clothes  (and some of the best dresses for breastfeeding).

Set up by a mum who struggled to find any nice nursing clothes after she’d had a baby, the site features a range of breastfeeding and maternity tops and dresses – from everyday clothes through to occasionwear. I was sent the Sally Marine dress in blue and cream to review:

The best dresses for breasteeding - breastfeeding dresses from Milk&Mummy

Which you can see in these pose-tastic photos (as well as the litte person who toddled into my photoshoot, aka mini Bradley Wiggins, as my mum commented on her hair).

I picked this dress because of the stripes, of course, but also because it looks really summery. And I love it so much – it has the easy and stylish simplicity that I want in clothes now I’m a mum. While the under-boob shelf access does make breastfeeding a breeze, it doesn’t scream breastfeeding dress and I could totally wear this if I wasn’t. It’s made out of organic cotton so feels lovely, but has washed really well so far.

It is slightly on the long side if you’re verging on the short side like me, but I was told all about this by the uber lovely Emma when I picked it. So while it looks great with flats – and flip flops! Imagine it being warm enough to get your toes out – it looks brilliant with heels, especially my lovely gold ones I don’t really get to wear any more. Hence the photo. But as it’s such a good dress for summer, I’m planning on wearing it with a pair of Sweedish Hasbeens I have my eye on..

The dress costs a very reasonable £49. I had no idea I’d still be breastfeeding this far down the line, so it would have been a, excellent investment.

Thanks so much Milk&Mummy for sending me the dress to review. And yes, talking about my boobs again, sorry everyone.

You look lovely! I’ve been worrying about this for the summer too. Winter feeding is fine as t-shirts and cardigans are easy to navigate but I love dresses in the summer and was wondering how on earth to make them work. I’d envisaged sitting half naked by the lake in order to feed the baby. A dress like this would be a great option.

I’m just laughing as I remember your post about people chasing after you and telling you off for not wearing a coat in the summer – imagine the reaction! Such lovely dresses x

urgh I know what you mean. I breast fed for 20 months and I lived in (unflattering) button down shirts with tank tops underneath and those wonderful nursing bras. You wouldn’t even think your dress is designed for breast feeding!

It’s just such a pain, isn’t it – it’s bad enough post-pregnancy when nothing feels right, but then you have to wear things that have easy access which aren’t things you’d normally wear! x
