The Best Post-baby Swimwear

October 14, 2012

Are you looking for the best post baby swimwear?

Post baby swimwear - Water Gem Speedo swimming costumeWhen it came to taking Eliza to the swimming pool, I was faced with an unexpected clothing crisis. I had no post baby swimwear!

I try out post baby swimwear

The last time I’d even been swimming* was during our pre-pregnancy holiday in Miami. And I didn’t think any of the bikinis I’d bought for that break would be suited for use with a wildly flapping baby in a swimming pool, particularly as I very much wanted to avoid any kind of boobs out situation. I definitely needed a post baby swimsuit.

So it was a happy coincidence that I was approached to review one of the women’s Speedo swimming costumes from Simply Swim. The Speedo brand was very much a flashback to childhood swimming lessons; however, I was really surprised by the variety and choice of modern, much more stylish ones on offer in Simply Swim range than the practical affairs I’d remembered.

In the end I chose the Water Gem one-piece in blackcurrant (£32), mainly because I loved the colour and 50’s retro-inspired style. But there were a lot of others that I’d have also been happy with (handily, there’s also a nice maternity swimsuit, probably offering a lot more support than your average high street one).

The Water Gem is part of the Speedo Sculpture range of body-fitted swimwear, which means it’s shaped really well (and I hate the phrase ‘mummy tummy’ but it offers lots of pulling-in if you need it!). It also has built-in boob panels, which are perfect for the breastfeeding mum who needs more, ahem, support in those areas. And it has a lower leg – meaning you avoid looking like an 90’s Baywatch reject – but it’s not too frumpy, ideal for when you haven’t worn a swimming costume in years and also dislike clothes that are practical with a passion.

So in short? After trying it out I can say that it’s a great swimming costume solution for a post-baby body, especially if you want something that looks good but isn’t, heaven forbid, anything even approaching mumsy.

Thank you to Simply Swim for sending me the swimming costume for review, and so sorry it took a while to write this up (I blame the Brazilian Olympic team who stayed in Crystal Palace and commandeered the sports centre). But if you’re planning a winter break – jealous – and need to buy some swimwear, then definitely take a look.

ha what a sweet dilemma for a new mummy! Swimwear is often the last thing on new mum’s minds but swimming lessons with babies are such a great idea! I think more mums may be investing in swimming costumes in the future thanks to this 🙂
