Nesting, nesting, 1-2-3

It’s hard to pick apart what’s been nesting over the past nine months, and what’s just been our house renovation. We’ve done all the major work now and have stopped anything else till it all settles down with the baby (as much fun as it was painting skirting boards hugely pregnant, it’s quite nice to have a break now). So we’re at the cosy-making and prettifying stage at the moment.

One of the rooms I love the most is our new front room / living room / lounge. When we moved in it was a dirty beige colour, with a pink carpet, 70s gas fire and built-in shelving units, and beautiful accessories like the shattered glass panelled door with a homemade draught extinguisher stapled on the bottom.

Needless to say we’ve changed everything, from the paint, wallpaper and carpet through to the new door. We painted the walls pale grey, with one wallpapered wall, and finally bought new sofas (after much deliberation about blowing the budget with something amazing, we realised this was futile in the face of toddlerdom so went for the Ikea Karlstad sofas in more grey). Alex’s parents ripped out the fireplace, and our builder then exposed all the original brickwork on the chimney breast. Who’d have thought something so amazing was hidden underneath all that plaster?

Changing the room has made such a difference as we’ve spent most of our post-baby time in here. It’s also been fun putting finishing touches on it, and one of these is the Cable and Cotton fairy lights that I was sent to review.

I’ve long lusted after the Cable and Cotton lights; the ones made of the colourful balls. As well as looking pretty, all of the Cable and Cotton products are handmade in Thailand under completely ethical conditions, and the work that’s done supports whole communities.

I was sent the 20 ball set (£20) and went for the Mojito colours – cream, grey, teal and green – because, well, if you can’t have a real one… Oh, and because they matched our wallpaper perfectly.

The balls and the light cable arrive separately, so you can assemble them yourself in your own colour pattern.

Here they are assembled, with the lights off…and on:

There’s something so cosy about fairy lights, isn’t there? These don’t have a hint of the university student / leftover Christmas decoration. And they look completely lovely even when they’re not even switched on.

The only slight negative is that they don’t have a separate on / off switch on the wire you have to plug and unplug them each time.

Ours are currently strung from the curtain rail in the corner of the room.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve done due to nesting? Last time I had a fit of…something, and ironed all the tiny babygros. I have no idea why considering I never iron anything unless I can help it. Looking forward to lots more baby nesting in this room in the near future.
