Beautiful Mexican Bola necklaces from Blooming Lovely

Blooming Lovely

I love wearing necklaces. My favourite pinboard is all about them (and my other favourite thing, stripes). I had to stop wearing necklaces when Eliza came along, and I’ll probably have to stop again as soon as the baby learns how to grip things. My poor undecorated neck. But for the time being, it’s being graced by something very meaningful that’s also incredibly beautiful; a Mexican Bola necklace  from Blooming Lovely.

So what’s a Mexican Bola necklace? It’s a chiming pendant traditionally worn by pregnant women to help them bond with their unborn babies. The chime is worn over your bump, and the sound is said to comfort and soothe the baby both in utero and when they’re out in the world.

Blooming Lovely was set up by Laura, a mum of two, to sell Mexican Bola necklaces, as well as a growing collection of other jewellery. I’ve followed Blooming Lovely on Twitter for ages, and when I announced I was pregnant Laura offered to send me a necklace to review.

There are five different types of Blooming Lovely Bolas, from the simple silver to the pretty silver, The price ranges from £14 to £26 depending on your choice of necklace (silver chain, natural cord and two Liberty-print ribbons). After a lot of deliberation I chose the pretty silver necklace, which is a ball decorated in tiny silver flowers. Laura sent the silver chain as well as the natural cord:

I’m enchanted by this necklace; from the way it looks, to the personalised packaging it came in, and of course the meaning behind it. And it’s so pretty, it’s not one you’d want to stop wearing when you have the baby (and the chime is designed to soothe the baby after they’re born too, and will hopefully make a good distraction at crucial points like nail cutting too).

I’ve been wearing the cord in the day and the chain in the evening – here it is with the chain:

Eliza is as transfixed by it as I am, and tries to grab it every time I wear it. I’m hoping the new baby will also be as entertained.

I love the idea of communicating with your baby without realising it, especially during second – or further – pregnancies, where you have much less time to dedicate to bonding with your baby. You can hear the chime – so it’s probably not one to wear to a silent library – but it is a really gentle, soothing sound.

Blooming Lovely also sell collections of other jewellery; I have my eye on the bee bracelet. It’s such a fantastic company, with utterly lovely things, for your bump and beyond.

That’s such a lovely idea. I’m in no doubt it will work too, I bet everytime the baby is unsettled they will be comforted when they hear it. When I was pregnant with Cherry we used to spend every Sunday at motocross races as Mr C used to ride, it was SO noisy there and when she was a baby and we started taking her she would always fall asleep to the sound of the bikes which I promise you is absolutely crazy given how loud they are! x
